Evolving Joinery
Evolving Joinery presents a contemporary interpretation of the traditional interlocking timber joints. It presents insights into the traditional forms of design and its findings into new perspectives for the future.
Interlocking joinery, employed from furniture design to building construction, creatively exploits material and geometry such that no extraneous mechanical fasteners such as bolts or screws are structurally required. As such, the design of novel details requires the understanding of timber as a natural composite material with its varied structural performance characteristics; its unique artisan techniques of fabrication, its geometrically intricate assembly procedures, and its aesthetics qualities.
Digital information technologies, namely computer-assisted structural design in combination with digital fabrication processes such as computer numerical control machining and multi-material 3D printing enables the conception and materialization of interlocking structural joints that were unattainable with timber crafted by hand.

2nd SUTD-MIT IDC Design Summit, 15 - 17 January 2014
The IDC is a dynamic institution predicated on the development of new and significant knowledge in the study of design as a fundamental human activity. The first IDC Design Summit in January 2013 was successful in achieving a collective commitment to shared goals and affirming existing research partnerships while germinating new collaborative relations. The second IDC Design Summit is motivated by an interest to reflect on accomplishments and a desire to query our collective thinking on the path forward. As an enterprise guided by the work of diverse researchers working within an existing structure of Design Grand Challenges and Design Research Thrusts, the IDC is well on its way to establishing an international reputation in advancing design science and design research.
The second IDC Design Summit has been organized to serve three priorities: first, it is important for all IDC personnel to be aware of the research portfolio and engage in a discussion about the evolving content. Therefore, this summit provides a comprehensive overview of the IDC research program both at SUTD and MIT and provides time for structured discussions regarding this evolving content. Second, it is equally important that the IDC remain open to and agile within a changing and uncertain regional and global future. This summit will offer an opportunity for participants to identify emerging and refined research pathways for the IDC by considering several important future scenarios. Finally, critical to the IDC’s future impact on the international stage is its ability to respond to emerging interests and coalescing priorities by all IDC researchers. This summit aims to engage all attendees on the future path of the IDC.
