The objective of this project is to design and build an innovative and sustainable carbonaceous and iron (Fe0)/sand (CarFeSand) filter system to demonstrate its simple yet effective on-demand point-of-use water purification system. Our CarFeSand filter is based on the adaptation of a centuries-old chemical remediation concept: water percolates slowly through layers of different filter media (sand/clays/biomass), and efficiently filters harmful pathogens, hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) and heavy metals from contaminated water via entrapment and adsorption onto the filter substrate. Household-scaled CarFeSand filters are a small adaptation of the traditional large, slow sand filters such that they can uniquely be operated intermittently under rugged conditions.
